Daily Dino Fact: Hollow bones

August 17th, 2009
A small pack of coelophysis keeps an eye out for prey

"Coelophysis" literally means "Hollow Form," in reference to its hollow bones

Today the Daily Dino Fact will be sharing some information on Aido’s favorite, a little dinosaur called coelophysis. While it may be confused with the compy, coelophysis is the small guy you saw in Jurassic Park 2, even though they mainly lived during the late Triassic (and early Jurassic). While they may not be intimidating by themselves, a pack of these fast bi-pedal theropods would have a good chance at taking down prey bigger than themselves.

They had large eyes and good eyesight, with long limbs they would use to accelerate and move quickly. Its name literally meant “hollow form” because of the dino’s hollow bones. The light bones would have made it a faster runner. It had a long, narrow head and a set of skinny, jagged teeth that it used to eat meat.

They were certainly the pipsqueaks among the larger dinosaurs, but their specialized adaptations made them able to take care of themselves just fine.

Daily Dino Fact: Hey Hadrosaur, could you quiet down?

August 15th, 2009
A Hadrosaur's nasal crest could have allowed it to make audible signals

A Hadrosaur's crest could have allowed it to make audible signals

Q: What was the noisiest dinosaur? - DJcool

A: It’s fairly safe to say that the hadrosaurs were the noisiest dinosaurs, at least that we know of. Some hadrosaur species had large crests that extended up from their skull. These crests were a long, hollow extension of the nasal cavity of the dinosaur. We’re not exactly sure what their use was, but most paleontologists assume they were used as a resonating acoustic chamber, allowing them to communicate with other hadrosaurs.

This utility has not been observed as heavily in other dinos, so mostly like these guys were the noisiest of the bunch. Thanks for your question Flyergal. Good thing we’d never have to take one of these dinos out to dinner, they’d probably make quite a commotion!

Daily Dino Fact: Horns, Frills and all kinds of crazy stuff

Q: What dino had the most fancy headwear? - Tyranogirl

A: The Ceratopsia group of dinosaurs had the craziest headwear of alls. Ceratopsians include dinos like Triceratops, like our good buddy horns. These guys had a wide array of fancy headwear although their use for them isn’t what you might think.

Most paleontologists now think that the headwear of ceratopsians was used for social purposes and not for defense. They’ve found marks on ceratopsian horns that suggest that males would lock horns in a somewhat friendly battle to determine superiority.

The ceratopsians had many different kinds of frills and horn arrangments. The picture above shows only a small sample of the different types of headgear that they sported.

Daily Dino Fact: Speed demons of the deep

August 13th, 2009
The dolphin-like icthyosaur could swim up to 25 mph

The dolphin-like Icthyosaur could swim up to 25 mph

Q: what did the ichthyosaur use to protect itself? i dont see any thing protective (my fav dino) - Horntrio

A: Thanks for the question, Horntrio. Technically the Ichthyosaurs weren’t dinosaurs at all because they lived in the water. Also unlike some dinos, these beautiful marine reptiles defended themselves with speed and agility. They could swim at speeds up to 25 mph (40km) and could dive deep into the ocean. Their large eyes, the largest of any animal in history, probably allowed them to hunt in dim, dark waters.

The truth is, Ichthyosaur didn’t have much to protect itself from, as it was one of the top marine predators throughout the Mesozoic. However, paleontologists have found fossil beds that suggest Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs fought each other. Now that would be a battle to watch!
